Local Area Networks is a visualization of all wifi networks witin a small range of the artist’s studio in Noble Square, Chicago. The artist designed, constructed and programmed a portable handheld, location aware wifi scanner. Data from the scanner was plotted on a map using ESRI ArcGIS. This data was then imported into a CAD environment for further processing. The aim of the project was to demonstrate the mutable nature of what might be considered private or home bound. Wifi networks reach outside hard boundaries and occupy public space. There is also interesting personalinformation revealed in the names of the networks.
